tell me, how is harry reid going to come up with something by monday? >> well, as you've been stressing for most of the show, correct me, this is not a budget. this is a last-minute deal that's going to have a few components and i will count them on one hand that will have a tax threshold. 250. i wouldn't be surprised if they went to him with a higher number. u.n. extension, doc fix and the umt with the sequester and that would be it. >> jimmy p., what do you think? will we have a deal on monday and is it going to be enough? >> i think we will have a deal. one big difference now than maybe a couple of weeks, three weeks ago is a lot of republicans believe that eventually they really believe that the president would cave and they would cave again just like they did in 2010 that if he's so worried about a second recession would just smear his second term and he would cave. if you saw the president today in the news conference, he did not look like a guy about to cave to me. he's not going cave. this deal will go through. >> what's it going to be. >> will

harry reid says he has reached out to the president on the phone a couple of times. republicans say there is no single issue that should break this. there is something that democrats are talking about. what we have learned is in an offer presented by republicans last night at 7:00 included within that was a request to make a change to how future increases to the payments of social security would change. not taking any money away presently but over the years to come reducing the amount of increase. that is called chain cpi. for democrats it is a nonstarter. here is majority leader harry reid. >> we're not going to have any social security cuts. at this stage that doesn't seem appropriate. i still hold out hope that we can get something done but i'm not overly optimistic but i am cautiously optimistic. >> so you hear some sense that there might be a potential for movement. i think we have to judge everything in little incremental steps. why do republicans want that? basically their focus is if they are giving on tax increases which we get the indication they are willin

harry reid wasn't at the capital yesterday. mitch mcconnell was there. the senior staff are trying to figure out what palsy is acceptable. they are trading very detailed information, they are getting scores from the joint committee on taxation to figure out how much money the various proposals raise. you have the white house team and democratic team in reid's office. the republican team in mcconnell's office. they are gaming out what they want and throw in offers across the table. the good news is they are trading those offers. >> t.j., can i say a word in defense of asinine politicians? the asinine politicians are reflecting real divisions in the country, divisions of self-interest, divisions of philosophy. it's more difficult to do because of the structure of our system, the way the two parties developed. ultimately, they are talking act thing that is cost people money and things that would benefit others financially. those are difficult issues to settle. you know, our system was designed to make them difficult to settle, not as difficult as they are i

essentially what john boehner is saying, you go first, harry reid. harry reid is trying to jam mitch mcconnell into allowing this vote to go forward without the 60-vote threshold, something that's necessary for virtually every vote here in the senate and mitch mcconnell says it's time for president obama to lead. the threshold question is, can something pass the house of representatives? can john boehner put something on the floor that needs the majority of democrat support that will not get republican support and none to speak of that would allow taxes to go up for people making more than $250,000 or 400,000 as was in the president's last offer and the answer to that question remains very, very unlikely. so we are where we are. this ain't schoolhouse rock, that's for sure. it's not like the house passes a bill, the senate passes a bill. this is a stand yau and the looks like the ultimate version of white house gridlock. >> right. and you mentioned the threshold. we have senator murkily on later today to talk about how crucial the filibuster is. i wa

we assume harry reid is here and their staffs are going back and forth. i spoke to one aide who said don't expect for any details to leak tonight. they'll be closed-lipped about this because the idea if anything does leak out it gives more of an opportunity for folks on either party to kill a deal if they don't like what they hear. some sort of a agreement will be announced tomorrow when the house is back in session and the senate is back in session and they can go back to say hey, this is the best opportunity. as far as the likelihood of this kraig, things have not been going well and there's optimism here and there and things are fluid like kristen says and it will be the final deal, but what we do know is these folks on capitol hill are very mindful of the damage that can be done to the economy if nothing is brief. we've had five down days in the stock market and we're preparing the country on tuesday for the first tax increase in 20 years, and i think finally at the end, that's starting to resonate at least with some of the elder members of both sides

senate majority leader harry reid has the task of trying to cobble something together that could get republican support in the senate and of course, also, some republican support in the house in order for this to pass congress. the white house has gone back to s bargaining position of wanting tax rates to expire for those over $250,000 a year. it seems unlikely that republicans would sign on to something like that, making it a significant possibility, hearing from democrats and republicans, we could go over this fiscal cliff, alina. >> brianna, you talk about cobbling together a last-minute deal. the president admits there will be no grand bargain at this point. if there is something sort of cobbled together at the last minute, are you getting an indication the president would come back from hawaii early? >> reporter: i think that's the expectation. officially, he's supposed to be here through the new year, but folks at the white house are pretty honest about the fact that he likely will be returning to washington around the time the senate reconvenes. it's really just a matter of wh

senator harry reid has not passed budgets. president obama's budgets have been voted on 3 times, the final vote tally, 0-610. so getting back to your first question, have i seen a plan out of this president that would be an obvious yes from us? i haven't seen any specific plan. all i have seen is demagoguery and a few numbers thrown out, whether it's $800 billion over 10 years or $1 of revenue for $3 of spending cuts, but nothing specific that we need to see to hammer this thing out. >> he says the onus is on congress, this is your job to get done. he said in the clip we just had, if it doesn't get done, the people who are going to pay are the senior who is will lose out on benefits that they are enjoying. is that an accurate representation of what will happen? >> no! this country needs presidential leadership. the house has passed two budgets that would spend $7 trillion less than what president obama's budgets were proposed at. again, remember president obama's budgets didn't get a vote from a member of his own party. we do
